Japanese Feed Team Learns More about DDGS at NCI Short Course

Fargo, N.D., USA - A 10-member Japanese Feed Industry DDGS Pelleting Team attended the Distiller's Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS): Nutrition, Use and Feed Manufacturing Short Course at Northern Crops Institute (NCI) April 20-24. The purpose of the team’s visit was to learn more about how to incorporate DDGS, a co-product of ethanol production, into high quality pelleted feed for poultry, swine, beef, dairy, and aquaculture.
The team members represent companies utilizing 80 percent of DDGS imported by Japan, according to the team’s sponsor, U.S. Grains Council (USGC). Japan imported 198,000 metric tons of U.S. DDGS in 2008, an increase of 114,000 tons from 2007, according to USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service.

Kim Koch, Ph.D., NCI Feed Production Center manager, coordinated and lectured in the course. Koch also led the team during feed pelleting instruction and demonstrations at the NCI Feed Center.
"Japan is one of the largest importers of DDGS in Asia and, judging from the interest this team had for livestock nutrition and production information when using DDGS, there is every indication that those imports will increase," says Koch. "The training this team received in nutrition, production management and feed manufacturing using DDGS will enable them to promote the many positive benefits of DDGS. The team interacted with professionals from the ethanol industry (large and small), recognized academicians from North Dakota State University, South Dakota State University, and the University of Minnesota, and had some hands-on pelleting experience using DDGS. The team witnessed the multi-disciplinary paradigm of today's animal agriculture at work - from field to finished product," Koch concluded.
Hiroko Sakashita, Associate Director, USGC Tokyo, escorted the team. USGC also brought a DDGS feed team to NCI in 2008.
"Since the members have been studying the production of pellets with DDGS at their own companies, this workshop contributes to their development of better pellets with a higher inclusion of DDGS. This will ultimately invite further growth in the consumption of U.S. DDGS in the Japanese market," says Sakashita.
Guest speakers included: Sally Noll, Ph.D., University of Minnesota; Mark Whitney, Ph.D., University of Minnesota Extension Service; Vernon Anderson, Ph.D., NDSU Research Extension Center; and Kurt Rosentrater, USDA-ARS, Brookings.
At SDSU, the group learned more about dairy nutrition and production using DDGS through presentations by Arnold Hippen, Ph.D.; Ken Kalscheur, Ph.D.; and David Schingoethe, Ph.D.; all from the SDSU Dairy Science Department.
The participants also toured Tharaldson Ethanol, Casselton, N.D.; POET Nutrition, Sioux Falls, S.D.; POET Ethanol Facility, Chancellor, S.D.; Turner County Dairy, Parker, S.D.; and Bones Feed Yard, Parker, S.D., and the SDSU Dairy Unit in Brookings, S.D.
The North Dakota Corn Utilization Council hosted the team at a dinner in Fargo. The team were guests of VeraSun/Valero at a dinner in Sioux Falls, S.D. In addition, POET hosted the team for lunch in Sioux Falls, S.D.
